Biking
Unlike the kayaking, which were camping trips, but similar to the hiking, the biking (most people call it “cycling”) consisted of day trips, where I would pack my folding mountain bike into my vehicle, drive to a trail, whether dirt or asphalt, and bike for an afternoon or well into the evening.
As was the case with the hiking and kayaking, it was almost exclusively a solo endeavor. I don’t think I have ever ridden along with any group or any other person. I would probably have been annoyingly slow for them anyways. This I would do once a week if weather permitted, especially in the hot weather, typically on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
Much of my life I was too busy and/or too poor to take vacations, so in a sense it was a kind of vacation that I took every weekend, albeit a very short one, lasting hours. But, it took me out of the world and into very different place, one far away from my job, from society and my normal surroundings. And as an added benefit, it was also good for you, both physically and psychologically. Once in a great, great, great while though, I did sneak away on the bicycle and camped out in the forest, but this was rare.
Shown here are my many day long trips on paved bike trails.
