Chapter 1: Happy Trails

Here I have featured the local paved bike paths that I ride each year, typically rail trails, which reside in the following states.

  • Massachusetts

  • Rhode Island

  • Connecticut

  • New York

Each year, coming out of the relative atrophy brought on by winter, I make it a point to start off with local rides in my neighborhood along wide roads.  I take these rides every other day depending upon the weather.  Once I get somewhat conditioned (again), I begin my slow, but steady progression on the weekends, riding the short bike paths that take maybe two hours or so.

As I become even more conditioned and the weather becomes warmer (I actually prefer riding in high heat of summer) I begin working my way up, riding on paths typically 25 miles in length (my medium rides), then it's off to the longer rides, typically 50 miles or so, and on paths that are "out and back".

Ultimately I get to my longer rides, typically 70 miles or more, and lasting 8 hours or so, and even into the night (I'm not fast, and I'm not an "early riser", but I'm relentless).  Some rides may consist of two bike paths, combined, end to end.

At the moment I have only a few rides listed, but as the time permits I will add the rest, and I'm always discovering new bike paths.
