Chapter 1: Maine
Here I have featured eight waterways that I have kayaked / camped on in Maine, organized in two areas:
-
The Outlands
-
The X-Files Highway
The Outlands. This is a name that I have ascribed to an area largely dominated by the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a famous wilderness area established in July of 1970. The area consists of two large lakes, Churchill/Eagle Lake and Chamberlain/Telos Lake and the Allagash River, forming a canoeing route, from Chamberlain/Telos Lake to the Allagash River, where it meets the St. Johns River.
The X-Files Highway. This is a name I have ascribed to Maine State Highway 16. I have driven it many times, at all seasons and times of the day to reach the remote lakes along it in the western part of Maine. I call it the X-Files Highway because it has a very isolated and creepy vibe to it. I've often told people if there was anyplace I thought I could imagine strange things happening, it would be that highway.
The Outlands
The X-FIles Highway
